One of the best things to college students about going away to college is finally living alone! Well, away from the parental unit at least. In college, there are many different options for living situations. Some colleges do not even have student housing as they are either community colleges or are a small campus so the students either commute from their homes or live somewhere off campus. Fortunately, for me, Ball State University does offer student housing where I have lived for my freshman and sophomore years but I will be living in apartment next year. There is a debate going on about whether or not living in a dorm is a good idea compared to living off campus as living off campus saves more money in the long run. I will show the views on both on off campus living and the different outcomes that can come out of these two options.
Ball State is home to over 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students per year.
Ball State offers 9 residence halls and an apartment complex for student housing. Room and board costs for one school year is around $9,500.
Most college freshman attending a university will be live in a dorm room, such as above. They may have a roommate(s) in which they share the room with. Living in a dorm as a freshman gives the student's an opportunity to make new friends and experience living on their own for the first time.
After living in the dorm freshman year, students either decide to stay another year in the dorm or live off campus in an apartment or house. College students living off campus save an average of $3,000 per year as a year's worth of rent is cheaper than living on campus.
I visited my friend's apartment that is off campus and she explains that she enjoys living off campus a lot more than when she lived in the dorms. Her rent is $425 a month and she is saving a lot of money this year by living off campus.
Though students save money and have more freedom living off campus, they do not have all the amenities that living on campus has to offer. No we can see what both living on and off campus have to offer and what is the best fit for you as a college student.
